Oil Prices Slide as Middle East Tensions Ease

Oil prices slide as Middle East tensions ease, with Brent and WTI falling 2.5%. Gold remains bullish near $4,650, while Bitcoin consolidates around $79,000. Markets now await US core PCE inflation data and Federal Reserve commentary at Jackson Hole.

Oil Prices Slide as Middle East Tensions Ease

Oil prices fell sharply on Wednesday as markets grew more optimistic about easing tensions in the Middle East and the US appeared to favour economic sanctions over immediate military action against Iran. The decline in energy prices also helped ease concerns about inflation and provided some relief to broader financial markets.

US Markets Remain Supported by Lower Yields

US stock futures were largely unchanged early Wednesday after the major averages advanced in the previous session.

The S&P 500 and Dow Jones gained around 0.3%, while the Nasdaq rose 0.8% on Tuesday. Lower Treasury yields supported risk appetite and helped equities recover ahead of key inflation data and Nvidia’s earnings results.

Treasury yields declined significantly during Tuesday’s session, easing some of the pressure that had recently weighed on equity markets. Investors are now turning their attention to incoming economic data for further clues about the Federal Reserve’s next policy moves.

Asian Markets Trade Higher

Asian equities were mostly positive, with South Korean and Japanese markets leading the gains.

The Kospi climbed around 2%, while Japan’s Nikkei 225 gained approximately 0.6%. The improved sentiment came as investors responded to lower bond yields and reduced concerns surrounding energy prices and geopolitical risks.

Oil Prices Fall as Geopolitical Risks Ease

Crude oil prices came under significant pressure as expectations of further escalation in the Middle East eased.

Brent crude fell around 2.5% to $86.22, while WTI declined 2.5% to $80.25. Markets are increasingly focused on the possibility of diplomatic and economic measures against Iran rather than immediate military escalation.

Optimism surrounding the potential reopening of the Strait of Hormuz has also reduced concerns over disruptions to global oil supplies. Lower geopolitical risk has contributed to the decline in oil prices and helped Treasury yields retreat from recent highs.

For markets, the direction of oil prices remains important because a sustained decline in energy costs could reduce inflationary pressure and influence expectations for Federal Reserve policy.

Bitcoin Pauses After Strong Rally

Bitcoin is trading around $79,000 after briefly moving above $81,000.

The cryptocurrency has experienced a powerful rally, gaining more than 24% in just three days, but momentum has eased as traders take profits and reassess the next move.

The $80,000 area remains an important psychological level. A sustained move back above $81,000 could restore the recent bullish momentum, while continued consolidation may signal a period of profit-taking following the sharp advance.

Gold Holds Above $4,600

Gold continues to maintain a bullish outlook, trading around $4,650.

The precious metal is receiving support from a weaker US dollar, expectations for softer US inflation and ongoing trade tensions. The decline in oil prices has also reduced concerns about renewed inflationary pressure, potentially lowering expectations for an immediate Federal Reserve rate hike.

The US Treasury’s expanded bond-buyback programme remains another supportive factor for gold, particularly as lower Treasury yields can reduce the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets.

Gold is now approaching the psychologically important $4,700 level. However, upcoming US inflation data and Federal Reserve commentary could determine whether the metal can sustain its upward momentum.

Core PCE Inflation in Focus

The immediate focus for markets is the July core PCE inflation report, the Federal Reserve’s preferred measure of underlying inflation.

Core PCE is expected to remain around 3.2% year-on-year. A softer-than-expected reading could weigh on the US dollar and Treasury yields, potentially providing additional support for gold.

Conversely, a hotter inflation reading could revive expectations for tighter Federal Reserve policy, strengthen the dollar and trigger a correction in gold and other risk-sensitive assets.

Jackson Hole Could Set the Tone

The major event later this week will be Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh’s speech at the Jackson Hole symposium on Friday.

Investors will be watching closely for any guidance on the Fed’s approach to interest rates and inflation. A more dovish tone could support gold and weaken the dollar, while a hawkish message could push yields higher and limit gold’s recent gains.

Market Outlook

Markets are balancing easing geopolitical risks, lower oil prices and shifting expectations for US monetary policy. Gold remains close to $4,700, while Bitcoin consolidates after its sharp rally and oil prices retreat as supply concerns ease.

The upcoming core PCE inflation data and Jackson Hole speech could prove decisive for the US dollar, Treasury yields and gold’s next major move.
